Today I release alpha version 0.2 of ExQuilla Exchange Web Service. This may be downloaded at the AMO site for the ExQuilla.
This release adds support for most primary email features, but not the EWS address book or calendar. However, this is still Alpha quality code, which means that many of the features have minor glitches.
Major Additions since last release
- Cross-account message copies and moves
- Message Filters
- Junk Processing (though moves of junk messages are not working)
- Virtual Folders
- Save message as a file
- Show message source
- Message print
- Improvements in handling of Unicode character sets
Further information is available at the ExQuilla page on this site.

This is a great add-on! I was looking for something like that for months. Thank you so much!
It is dead easy to use and way simpler than DavMail.
Good work!
Looking forward seeing a stable release.

Thanks for the comment. I’ve been quite amazed actually at the lack of comments and feedback on this. In fact, yours is the first confirmation from anyone, anywhere, that this actually works on anything expect my own computer.
There is a problem, but I don’t know where it comes from. I tried to fix the msf file, all the emails disappeared (which is normal) but it is reconstructing the index. Do you know anything about that?
If you need some help to translate your add-on in French.
Also I noticed that in the account configuration when navigating out from “Exchange Server” freezes the settings window. If it then necessary to click on cancel and open again the settings window.
I use Thunderbird 3.1.7 on a Windows 7 64bits ultimate, everything in French.
Re: “There is a problem, but I don’t know where it comes from.” – It would be helpful if I had more information on what you mean by “There is a problem”.
Re: ‘when navigating out from “Exchange Server” freezes the settings window.’
I don’t have this problem, but I have seen this class of problems in non-Exchange code when there is a failure in the code somewhere that saves the account. A typical cause would be that one of the referenced folders no longer exists. Do you see any errors in the error console when this occurs? I’ll note this issue though and try to protect the code better from setup failures.
Re French translation. Thanks for the offer. It is a bit too early for that at the moment, but in about 3-6 months I’ll probably be looking for help with translation.

The problem was that I didn’t know how to give information on the bug.
It comes from the fact that I modified the login. I didn’t use the address as login but only my domain login I replace with the address and now I can have access to the INBOX folder. But when I try to access any other folders The Exchange server authorization failed and it is asking for a password with the login “blabla@ensam.eu@www.mail.ensam.eu”. (the http://www.mail.ensam.eu comes from the webmail address…)
Hi,
I will definitely use your add-on at work towards our exchange servers, but I’m hesitating because this is work computer and I don’t want some bad things happen while using your add-on (ie lost mails, unwanted sent mails, mailbox corruption etc. etc.).
Shall I wait some more time until it comes to a beta qualify or do you think its good enough to be used only for mail.
Until your add-on is available, I’m using the IMAP access which I have some level of trust.
Otherwise, I think this is a great work and I’m sure will have lots and lots of users as it closes a big gap. Especially when you manage to get the calendar, tasks and contacts, you’re done.
The current release is not really intended for critical use. So I would not recommend it for your only method of accessing work email. Really my main market target anyway is for people’s second computers at home, where the alternative is OWA. For that purpose, I think that the current release, even though in Alpha status, is quite adequate. I certainly use it myself on a daily basis. But because the application has not been submitted for review yet to Mozilla, then automatic updates are not functioning. So you would need to check periodically yourself for updates and reinstall it.
Right now I am moving on to the contact portion. I have a few new fixes for email that aren’t in the released version, but they are not that critical for most users.
Where can we find your extension, please? Link on Mozilla web site doesn’t work.
Thank you.
Regards,
Cedric.
The Mozilla addon site changed their review policies, so that even alpha addons like this need some review, so they disabled it until that preliminary review was done. Rather than have them review the 0.2 version, I am going to wait until the next release of ExQuilla before I ask them to review it, which I expect to submit within one week.
So I strongly suggest that you wait until you see another announcement here that the next revision is available. But if you can’t wait, you can get the 0.2 version here.
Is there anything new here..I think this is exactly what I am looking for.. a way to access email at the corporate exchange servers when they only external access provided is owa (web) or activesync.
hoping you are continuing this effort.. i have seen nothing to match it.
ewww and it isn’t compatible with Thunderbird 8.0… i have to find a version 3?? wow.
ExQuilla is in the process of being released for TB version 9, 10, and 11. See http://exquilla.zendesk.com/home or download at http://mesquilla.net/exquilla-currentrelease-tb-windows.xpi
Essentially I released an early version a year ago, but have now got mail and contacts working pretty well, so it’s time to get back on the release train. In the future I will be releasing for new version of Thunderbird, as well as supporting the extended release version of Thunderbird which will be based on Thunderbird 10.
Hy,
I m french and i use thunderbird 8. The extension “New account type 10″ is available but it doesn’t work.
I need the option “Exchange web service” but it doesn’t appear. I don’t understand. Can you help me ?
Thank you very much for your help
T
You say that you need “Exchange web service” link. That actually is not “New Account Types”, it is ExQuilla. I am in the process of preparing ExQuilla version 11 for release (supports TB 9, 10, and 11 in Windows, sorry no French localization).
Although I have not finished all of the documentation, the addon is actually currently available, just not announced. You can go to http://exquilla.zendesk.com/home and look over what is there, including the download link http://mesquilla.net/exquilla-currentrelease-tb-windows.xpi
OK. I understand now :”This extension will only work with Thunderbird 3.1.x versions. This release also only supports Windows, though future versions should support Linux and Mac OS versions.”
So,
Again me, New account type can’t be installed on thunderbird 3.1.17 ??
Sorry for the slow reply.
New Account Types only supports current versions of Thunderbird. The currently released New Account Types 11.0 supports TB 9, 10, and 11.
