OfflineThank you for extending the fliltering capacity of Thunderbird.
I would like to create a filter based up on the Display Name in the
FROM field.
I have been getting a bunch of messages with the following info:
from: Approved VIAGRA® Store <gworley@bygeorgecomputer.com>
Subject: varies, most of the time it is "Please Read" or "Get ..% off"
to: <gworley@bygeorgecomptuer.com>
I cannot mark it is junk as I did that and ever inbound email was
marked as junk.
Is this possible with your extension? If not can we make it possible?
I have massive filters based on this one issue.
Thank you in advance,
George Worley
With the javascript search capabiity in FiltaQuilla, it is not very difficult to implement an arbitrary search of address fields (which works in filters as well) using some very simple javascript and FiltaQuilla.
But the standard filter in TB3 already provides a search capability in the FROM field, with expressions such as CONTAINS that could look for something like "VIAGR" in the display name. Is that sufficient for your needs? Or do you need something more complex than that?
Personally, I don't believe that a custom designed filter is likely to be an effective way to combat spam. The bayes processor used for junk management in Thunderbird is a better option. Is there some reason that is not working for you?

OfflineThank you. I was unaware that Thunderbird 3 was able to address the display name and worked the way I wanted. Thanks. The last time I tried this was using Thunderbird 2 and it didn't work.
The messages in question are getting through the bayes processor because the From and To fields were from me.
Thanks,
George
"The messages in question are getting through the bayes processor because the From and To fields were from me."
In TB3, the junk processing specifically detects whether a message is "from" you, and if so does not whitelist it (which is the process that results in the bayes processor skipping the message). This was not true in TB2.
So I suggest that you try again the junk processor in TB3 to see if it can help with your junk management issues.
