Hi, rkent,

This is going to be rather long, as I assume more detail is more helpful.  If you don't want to go through the entire thing, then skip to item 15.

I installed your extension, and I was no longer able to send email via smtp.

Here is the course of events.

1) Installed Thunderbird 3.0.4 on Windows XP SP3.

2) Imported Outlook Express settings.

3) Allowed TB to index all messages, then setup a date filter.

4) Realized I could not mod the subject with default filtering capabilities in TB.

5) Looked up and installed filtaquilla (1.0.1?, whichever was avail. on 6/8/10).

6) Restarted TB.

7) Changed filter to filter by date, prepend a string to the subject, and forward to another email address.

8) Manually ran filter on the trash folder, got an error message that email could not be sent, clicked "OK" (or cancel, whichever it was), got the message multiple times, and continued to click through.

9) Encountered an infinite loop, in which the error message continually appeared and "OK" was clicked.  Could have been my "Enter" key got stuck, but, either way, I couldn't get out of it until I stopped the TB process in task manager.

10) Realized I had not yet successfully sent a message using TB before installing the extension.

11) Reopened TB and tried to send a message.  Received an alert that the message could not be sent because the server timed out.  Toggled various settings (plain smtp, SSL/TLS, STARTTLS, no username/pass), received same alert every time, but eventually returned to my original settings.

12) Removed your extension, restarted TB, tried to send again, and got the same alert.  Toggled settings again as above.

13) Rebooted, started TB, tried to send again, and got the same alert.  Toggled settings again as above.

14) Uninstalled and reinstalled TB, no settings import required because my old profile was still there, tried to send again, and got the same alert.

15) Uninstalled TB, removed all profile (local settings and appdata) information, and removed all prefetch files associated with TB.

16) Reinstalled TB 3.04 and imported Outlook Express profile.

17) Successfully sent several messages via smtp with TB (prompted for password, which I entered and saved).

18) Installed FiltaQuilla 1.0.1 again, did not setup any filters, and was once again unable to send email with the same alert.

Let me know if you want me to go away or wait for TB 3.1 GA, if you would like any more info, or if you would like me to do anything else.

Thank you,

Nathan

You have certainly gone through the same steps that I would have gone through to try to confirm that FiltaQuilla is your problem. I can see why you reached that conclusion.

Yet FiltaQuilla does not directly change anything associated with sending of messages, so it's hard to see how it would cause those symptoms. I am unaware of any other reports of this same issue. Server timeouts are also notoriously fickle symptoms – we regulary get BugZilla reports of symptoms like this in the main code for that same reason – try https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=can%27t+send to get a few examples. So without more evidence, I am not going to be able to act on it. It would also be quite difficult for me to debug this remotely with no clue as to the possible interactions that could be at the root of this.

I appreciate your report, and I'm sorry that FiltaQuilla did not work for you.
