Hi there,

i've just upgraded to Tonequilla 1.0.0 (&Thinderbird 3RC1)

Now when an email arrives tonequilla starts the default media player (vlc in my case)

to play the sound. This iis quite annoying because:

- The media player window is left open after the mailsound

- When something was playing at the time a mail arrives this is interrupted

Can you please tell me the exact file name of the file that you are trying to play, but is opening in the default media player instead of internally?

OK I think I know the issue. I believe that it is possible to override the MIME type registered for .wav files, and if you do then I would pass them to the operating system to play. I think I will instead specifically check for .wav file extensions, and use the local Mozilla player for those directly.

Please try the updated file at:

and see if it solves your problem.

Hi!

I love the idea of your add-on, but unfortunately it's not working properly for me.

wav-files don't play any sound and mp3 or ogg files are opened in windows media player. The "normal" notification sound of Thunderbird works, though, so Thunderbird can produce sound.

My system is Vista Home Premium, Thunderbird 3.0.1 (portable).

Thanks for your suggestions,

Jan

For .wav sounds, the program is supposed to detect files that have an extension ending in .wav, and use the Mozilla internal player for those, just like the standard Thunderbird notification code. What is the exact file name of the wav file you are trying to play, that fails?

For mp3 using the system player (such as windows media player) is by design. Mozilla does not have a native capability to play .mp3.

Ogg files are supposed to use the internal Mozilla Ogg player, but it relies on the operating system (in cooperation with an internal Mozilla system) to detect which files are Ogg files. Have you changed somehow in your system the MIME type associated with Ogg files?

I tried the supplied sound files: applause, freedom, gottoreachyou, nightingale, squishbeat, the brightest star, we are in love are all wav files that do not work.

I just found out that drumriff, duogourd and hellfire do work. And the brightest star.ogg also plays within Thunderbird.

That's great and shows that my initial testing was rather incomplete. Sorry for that. But it doesn't seam to be only bit rate or mono/stereo related, either. Can you work out what the file restrictions may be?

Thanks,

Jan

PS: BTW, I am not using version 1.0.0 but 1.0.1

I really don't have any explanation of why certain files would be giving you trouble. The code just uses an internal audio play that is part of the Mozilla base code. So I really don't know what to tell you to do.

I would be interested though to know if you have the same problems if you try to use one of those failing sound files as the default sound for incoming emails rather than on a ToneQuilla filter. The underlying player is the same.

Hi rkent

I tried to use applause as the standard sound file and it doesn't work either. Do all the samples work in your system?

I'm having the same problem with all but the drum, and three others mentioned not playing on my PC with Vista.

When emails are received on the server (AT&T/Yahoo) and my TB 3.1.10 default sound notifies me there's a email on the server, I can't get the TQ player to play.  My filter is set to when "status is new" play the sound, but it doesn't work for a check for either my inbox or email address.  TQ does work when email is manually downloaded, but that defeats the purpose of audibly distinguishing which email box is getting a new email before it arrives.  Curiously, the status at the bottom of the TB screen says "no new messages to download", even though a message is on the server; the default sound (when on) plays, but not the TQ (when default is off).

You need to make sure that the filter itself is working first. Add a second filter action to the filter, like star or tag the email, and then make sure that the additional action works (which shows you that the filter is working).

The only other issue that I am aware of is if something else starts to play a sound, which clobbers the ToneQuilla sound. There is not much else I can say that would be helpful.
